HULU LANGAT, May 18 — Action to close schools or kindergartens will be taken if the number of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) infections is high.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said so far the infection was still under control and no schools were closed due to the disease.

"No school has been closed yet. I have asked for the latest report update on the infection.

"If the cases reach a high level, we will take action, including closing schools because the disease is prone among children," he said.

He said this at the Selangor Aidilfitri Open House for the Hulu Langat district at the Laman Niaga Komuniti in Bandar Baru Bangi last night.

Earlier, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah informed HFMD cases in the country have recorded an increase of 15 times, to 31,661 as of May 14, compared with only 2,121 cases reported in the same period last year.

“Selangor contributed the largest number of HFMD cases, with 8,864 cases or 28 per cent of the total cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with 4,421 cases (14 per cent), Sabah with 2,650 cases (8 per cent), Perak with 2,638 cases (8 per cent) and Kelantan with 2,493 cases (7.9 per cent), while other states reported fewer than 1,500 cases,” he said in a statement yesterday.
