SHAH ALAM, May 14 — The Selangor government will initiate a clean-up and conservation effort in Pulau Redang and Pulau Tenggol, Terengganu and Pulau Tioman, Pahang, through the Ocean Cleanup initiative.
State executive councillor for infrastructure and public amenities Izham Hashim said the programmes would be held this year, starting with Pulau Redang this month, followed by Pulau Tenggol in July and Pulai Tioman in August.
“Under the Selangor Maritime Gateway, since 2016, we have initiated several clean-up works, including the Ocean Cleanup, which serves to ensure that garbage does not enter the sea, as previously carried out in Sungai Klang.
“We have coordinated with the Pahang and Terengganu state governments and had received the support to carry out the clean-up progress at the islands,” he told SelangorKini.
Izham said the programme would also be in collaboration with the Selangor Fisheries Department, Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas), Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Corporation Berhad and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Marine Ecosystem Research Centre (Ekomar).
“Some 30 individuals will be involved in the programme, which is part of the state government’s effort to continue its commitment to conserving the environment,” he said.
