Sungai Semenyih pollution resolved swiftly, water treatment plant back in operation

SHAH ALAM, April 30 — The diesel odour pollution that had temporarily suspended operations at the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant (WTP) has been resolved swiftly.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the WTP has resumed its operation at 4pm today.

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) the pollution has been resolved within a short period of time.

“The diesel odour pollution was detected at 12.15pm noon and at 4pm the odour pollution reading was at 0 threshold odour number (TON). Water supply will be restored in stages after midnight,” he said on Twitter today.

In a related post on Facebook Amirudin commended the efforts made by Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor).

“Luas and Air Selangor have worked hard to overcome the pollution within a short period of time.

“Water tankers are on standby and have been deployed to the critical areas,” he said.

Earlier, Luas said it received information from Air Selangor on diesel odour pollution detected at the Sungai Semenyih (Jenderam Hilir) WTP inlet at 12.30pm.

The agency said it quickly launched an investigation into several locations that may be the source of the pollution.

“Luas team also increased the frequency of odour sampling at static monitoring locations from 1 hour to 30 minutes to closely monitor the current status of river water,” it posted on Facebook today.

The agency said static monitoring conducted earlier at 12pm in the area around 1.5 kilometres from the inlet showed a reading of 0 threshold odour number (TON).

WTP is only allowed to operate when the reading is 0 TON.

“Luas will continue to monitor and inform on the latest information from time to time,” it said.
