SHAH ALAM, April 21 — The number of sports events that will be included in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2022 will be announced after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, said Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi.
He said there is no official decision on the matter, although it has been recently discussed during the Sukma Technical Committee's meeting.
"For the time being the National Sports Council has not finalised the sporting events that will take place, seeing as some of these events do not have sufficient participation numbers from other states.
"An event can only be held if eight states participate. So we have not been able to decide on which event, but usually, Selangor will participate in all events," Mohamad Nizam said when contacted.
Earlier on, state executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said 800 state athletes are expected to participate in the games which will take place from September 29 to October 8 around the Klang Valley.
This year's games, titled ‘Sukma XX, MSN 2022’ was supported and approved by the Cabinet on February 23 to further develop sports on the state level.
Sukma's Supreme Committee meeting also agreed with the resolution to maintain the previously-agreed age limit rules and conditions.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Nizam said Sukma athletes will be given Aidilfitri holidays for a week beginning on April 29 before resuming their training.
He added athletes cannot rest for too long but instead must be in peak condition in order to face the competition for several important tournaments before Sukma.
"We hope state athletes will not shirk their responsibilities even during the festive season. We will also conduct regular fitness tests on them," Mohamad Nizam said.
