SHAH ALAM, April 6 — The Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) is taking samples of foods in the high-risk category that could cause food poisoning in Ramadan bazaars so as to guarantee customers' safety.

Its director Datuk Dr Sha'ari Ngadiman said santan-based foods, beef and eggs have been tested to prevent any incidents that can be detrimental to health.

"Traders are advised to ensure their food supply is safe, maintain self-cleanliness and the cleanliness of their surroundings, avoid the risk of cross-contamination as well as ensure all foods sold are prepared every day instead of reheating leftovers that could not be sold in time.

"The monitoring and examining of food premises will be intensified with the cooperation of local authorities to ensure foods sold at Ramadan bazaars are always safe to be consumed.

"JKNS also calls upon Ramadan bazaar traders to ensure all food handlers attend food handling lessons and take anti-typhoid injections," he said in a statement.

Dr Sha'ari advised bazaar goers to practice the concept of 'observe and choose' before buying their fast-breaking meals so as to prevent food poisoning.

"The concept encourages consumers to observe and choose sellers who handle and sell their foods in a clean and safe manner before making their purchases.

"Subsequently the habit of seeing, smelling and tasting before eating should be a daily practice before one enjoys a meal," he said.
