KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has planted 19,800 mangrove saplings through a mangrove forest rehabilitation programme in the areas around the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station (SJSAS), Manjung and in Kinta, Perak since 2013 until now.
In a statement, TNB said the locations were Pasir Panjang in Kinta district and Kampung Sungai Tiram and Kampung Sungai Limau in Manjung.
“This number is part of the 23,700 mangrove saplings planted by TNB in states in the peninsula apart from Perak, and these include the coastal areas of Perlis, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
“Among the locations are the firefly habitats which are being conserved by TNB at Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor, Selangor; Kampung Dew in Taiping, Perak; Kampung Sungai Timun in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan and Kampung Yak Yah in Kemaman, Terengganu,” it said.
From January until December last year, TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society, planted 1,167 mangrove saplings along the coastal area near the Tuanku Muhriz Power Station in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, TNB further said.
”This continuous initiative is in line with TNB’s commitment to tackling environmental, social and governance issues towards conserving the flora and fauna species as well as providing new habitats for wildlife and preventing coastal erosion in the long run.
“It is also expected to benefit the local communities in terms of developing new economic opportunities through eco-tourism activities and enriching the marine life which has the potential of increasing the income of fishermen,” it added.
