Hesitant parents urged to take children for health checks before getting Covid-19 jab

SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — Parents who are hesitant in allowing their children to receive the Covid-19 vaccines are advised to take them for health screenings beforehand.

Selangor Task Force Operation (STFO) director Dr Mohammad Farhan Rusli said this could help assure the parents by knowing the health status of their children.

“It (vaccination) should not be a problem. Usually, parents are well aware of their children’s health status, but they can take their children for a medical check-up first if in doubt.

“If a child has no history of any medical complications within the first eight years of their lives, and both of the parents are healthy, the child would generally have good genes and is healthy,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini.

Dr Mohammad Farhan said the parents should not be worried as children receive a different dosage compared to adults.

“Some parents are concerned (of the side effects) of an enlarged heart and death after being vaccinated, but the truth is, the risk of fatality from Covid-19 is higher,” he said.

The Health Ministry recently announced that children aged five to 11 years old would be given the Covid-19 shots beginning February 3.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the decision was made based on data, information and insights obtained from the Technical Working Group and the panel members of the Vaccination Clinical Guidelines for Children.
