Sentosa rep: Be wary of unscrupulous syndicate targeting flood victims

By Nasuha Badrul Huzaini

SHAH ALAM, Jan 5 — A police report has been lodged against a syndicate involving several individuals, who are described as actively deceiving flood victims in Klang by targeting senior citizens and single mothers.

The Selangor Menteri Besar’s special officer Dr Gunaraj George said the syndicate, through its agent, charges a fee of up to RM200 for each application form, ostensibly to manage the application procedure for the flood aid provided by the state government.

Gunaraj, who is also the Sentosa assemblyman, said all of the community service centres in Selangor have been working hard to help manage the flood aid application for free.

“The state representatives’ offices are working closely with the District and Land Department to ensure any applications related to flood aid are carried out smoothly.

“It is very frustrating to see these irresponsible persons trying to take advantage of flood victims during this difficult time.

“Therefore I urge the people to be more cautious of fraudsters. To flood-affected residents, they can liaise directly with their respective assemblyman’s office and the land office,” he said in a statement today.

Previously, the state government announced the distribution of RM1,000 cash aid to the heads of flood-affected households under the Selangor Bangkit initiative.

Eligible recipients include flood victims who were relocated to the registered temporary relief centre (PPS), private PPS, and those who chose to remain at home.

The disbursement of cash aid is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
