HULU LANGAT, Dec 30 — A total of 11,194 families that were transferred to temporary relief centres (PPS) following the recent floods in Selangor will receive cash assistance from the state government by January 20.

Under its Selangor Bangkit initiative, the state government had begun distributing the RM1,000 cash assistance in stages to flood victims from December 28.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the families placed at registered relief centres and those run by non-governmental organisations could receive the assistance.

“We are also liaising with the Federal development unit to distribute the aid together. I have directed all districts to use the same distribution process at other PPS.

“For those who were not relocated, the head of villages, council members or grassroots leaders will get the list of the affected flood victims,” he said after disbursing the Selangor Bangkit aid to 228 families in Sungai Serai PPS, yesterday.

The Menteri Besar had also distributed donations to the relief centres at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Abdul Jalil and Sekolah Rendah Agama Dusun Nanding.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said he would chair the state executive councillor meeting tomorrow to discuss other assistance involving farmers and small traders.

“These groups were also affected by the flooding. However, we need to focus on the post-flood cleanup process first,” he added.

On December 21, the Selangor government announced a total allocation of RM100 million in funds under the Selangor Bangkit initiative, following the major flood incident in the state two weeks ago.

Apart from infrastructural recovery, the initiative also includes RM10,000 aid to the next of kin of each victim who died in the recent floods.

A RM1,000 cash aid will also be distributed to the heads of families to help restore their homes. This initiative would benefit some 30,000 families hit by the floods.
