KLANG, Dec 11 — The distribution of free 70,000 subscriber identification module (SIM) cards to the targeted groups in the state is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said so far more than 20,000 individuals have benefitted from the SIM card’s one-year free internet data service.

“Currently we are still distributing the SIM card to the people, especially to students to facilitate their online learning sessions.

"We wanted to ensure the people to have (internet) access in line with the new norm culture that demands everything to be conducted online," he said.

He said this during the handover ceremony of school infrastructure aid at Sekolah Menengah Persendirian Cina Ping Hwal here today.

On August 4, Amirudin announced that 70,000 people in Selangor will receive the SIM card with free internet data for a period of 12 months, involving an allocation of RM17.5 million.

He said a total of 200 SIM cards were distributed to each state constituencies to be given to those who were eligible.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said various programmes were provided to support the continuity of education during the Covid-19 pandemic such as the Tuisyen Rakyat Selangor (PTRS) programme on the ePTRS.my portal.

According to him, learning module books were also distributed to students who do not have smart devices or have limited internet access.

"The challenge of the education sector in Selangor is to provide highly skilled human capital in line with the economic needs towards becoming a smart state," he said.
