SHAH ALAM, Dec 8 — Selangor’s economic growth has seen a positive trend for the fourth quarter of 2021, following the reopening of economic sectors after the implementation of the movement control order (MCO), said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said this in line with the projections made by economists, where affected sectors such as the hotel and tourism industries are expected to bounce back after the National Recovery Plan (NRP) commenced..

“These sectors have been badly hit by MCO enforcement and Covid-19. In fact, several state government subsidiaries are also among those affected, with some forced to shut down due to high operating costs.

“I cannot provide exact figures on how many companies were forced to close down during the MCO enforcement period, but I have sighted data from the Employees Provident Fund, which indicated a significant decline of contributions from employers.

“However, the implementation of the NRP has helped economic recovery in addition to the gradual reopening of many sectors previously subject to the Federal government’s approval,” Amirudin said in response to a query from Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat during the State Legislative Assembly, here today.

The Menteri Besar added that further details on the number of companies affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in Selangor will be issued by the Department of Statistic Malaysia (DOSM).

“I will get the figures and provide a written answer to the Rawang assemblyman,” he said.
