SHAH ALAM, Nov 29 — The state governmen via Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) is targeting a reduction in non-revenue water (NRW) to 25 per cent, by 2025.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said as of this October, the average NRW for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya stands at 28.2 per cent compared to last year at 28.5 per cent.

"It is Air Selangor's long-term and medium-term plan to reduce the NRW to its lowest. We target one per cent every year for the best rate, reaching 25 per cent by 2025.

"It should be remembered that the NRW reduction is not an easy method, and requires many planning aspects including the replacement of various components, the management of logistics, as well as other infrastructure. We cannot compare with other states, since Selangor has the longest piping compared to other states like Melaka," he said.

Izham was responding to the query by Kuala Kubu Bharu assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, who asked why Selangor could not reach the NRW as Melaka, which achieved 20 per cent.

He added for the pipe replacement process, RM174 million has been allocated to that purpose, consisting of the designing costs, site supervision, and work implementation, by next year.

"A total of RM248.7 million was allocated via loans from the state government to Air Selangor in 2017, and it is used for the pipe replacement programme from 2017 to 2019," Izham said.
