Selangor preps for 16 compulsory events in Sukma KL

SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — The National Sports Council (MSN) Selangor is still awaiting the decision on the upcoming 20th edition of the Malaysian Games (Sukma) set to be held in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Its executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said they are nonetheless preparing athletes for the 16 compulsory events, to compete in the biennial games hosted by MSN.

He said the organisation of 31 events, which should have been held in Johor, proved to be difficult due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"For the time being, Sukma's Supreme Committee has yet to decide on which sports are to be listed and to be excluded, including the competition format.

"So it is difficult for us to work, but we will prepare for the 16 compulsory sports, which include rugby, boxing, shooting, badminton, and pencak silat," Nizam said when contacted today.

On October 28, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the Sukma games scheduled to take place in Johor would be postponed to 2024.

During a meeting Sukma's Supreme Committee agreed to organise the games and Para Sukma Games at KL in 2022.

The national-level sporting event was supposed to be held from July 11 to 22, before being twice postponed to March and April 2021 as a result of the pandemic.
