State govt will not shut down essential services factories allowed to operate by Miti

SHAH ALAM, Aug 30 — The Selangor government will not close any factories under the essential services sector that have obtained the approval to operate from the Ministry of International and Trade (Miti) during the movement control order (MCO) period.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the local councils are only responsible for ensuring the factories comply with the conditions of their licences.

“Therefore, the state government will not close the factories provided the premises have been approved by Miti and comply with the licence conditions as set by the local councils,” he told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today when answering questions from Pandamaran state assemblyman Leong Tuck Chee.

Leong wanted to know whether the state government has the authority to seize the operations of factories in Selangor and could the state be sued if it did not follow the National Security Council (NSC) directives.

According to subsection 3(2) Act 776 of the NSC Act 2016, Ng said the NSC is the central authority for the government to consider matters relating to national security.

“The act does not provide penalties or offences to the state government due to the failure to comply with any directives issued by the NSC,” he said.
