New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia hit record high of 15,902

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia hit an all-time high of 15,902 today, the second consecutive day of infections breaching the 15,000 mark, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This brings the cumulative total for positive cases to 996,393 since the pandemic broke out early last year.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 15,573 cases, with 144 deaths and 30 new clusters.

In a Twitter post, he said Selangor again topped the list with 7,351 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,406 cases.

“A total of 867 cases were recorded in Kedah, followed by Johor (804), Sabah (712), Melaka (631), Negeri Sembilan (625), Penang (505) and Kelantan (502),” he added.

Other states registering three digits are Perak with 469 cases, Pahang (406), Terengganu (267) and Sarawak (261), while Putrajaya had 59, Labuan (30) and Perlis (seven).

Meanwhile, in his official statement, Dr Noor Hisham said the new cases today comprised 15,876 local transmissions and 26 import cases.

He said in the same period, there was a record number of recoveries with 9,471 patients discharged, bringing the overall total of recovery cases to 834,858.

The latest development takes the total active cases to 153,633, and there are 950 cases being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) including 468 of them requiring respiratory assistance.

There were 184 new deaths reported in the past 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 death toll in Malaysia to 7,902 victims.

He said based on the data yesterday, the rate of infectivity or R-naught (Rt) of Malaysia is 1.09 with Terengganu having the highest Rt with 1.37, followed by Kedah (1.23) and Penang (1.22).

In this regard, Dr Noor Hisham said 27 new clusters were detected involving 15 workplace clusters, community clusters (seven), detention centre clusters (two) and one cluster each for higher education institutions, import and high-risk groups.
