SHAH ALAM, July 24 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari is hopeful for the Malaysian contingent to take home the country’s first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“I wish all members of the Malaysian contingent good luck, especially to the athletes from Selangor.

“Let's realise the dream of the first gold medal for Malaysia at the Olympics. Good luck!" wrote Amirudin on Twitter today.

Last night, the opening of the world's largest sporting event took place in an almost empty stadium, with fewer than 1,000 dignitaries attending the ceremony at the 68,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

The prestigious sports event held from July 23 to August 8 will see a total of 30 Malaysian athletes competing in 27 events involving 10 types of sports.

Four of them represent Selangor, namely Phee Jing En (swimming), Lee Hup Wei (high jump), Gavin Kyle Green (golf) and Farah Ann Abdul Hadi (artistic gymnastics).

In the Rio 2016 games, Malaysia, represented by 32 athletes, took home four silver and one bronze medal, which is considered the country's best achievement at the Olympics.
