#benderaputih: Selangor reps ready to help those in need

SHAH ALAM, July 2 — Selangor state assemblymen are ready to help residents who raise a white flag in front of their homes as a sign that they need immediate assistance.

Meru assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar said the campaign made it easier for state reps to identify those in dire need of help as not all poor people own smartphones or know where to apply for aid.

“We have helped several in Meru constituency after they display the white flag, we gave them foods, baby milk and disposable diapers,” he said when contacted today.

Malaysians on social media have come up with the #benderaputih (white flag) campaign for those in dire need of food and essentials to indicate this to neighbours without needing to beg for help.

Sentosa assemblyman Dr G Gunarajah said the campaign enabled him to assist two families in Kampung Padang Jawa, in Klang, yesterday.

“It made it easier for us to help the less unfortunate and channel food supplies from the additional RM50,000 fund allocated under the Kita Selangor Package 3.0.

“We have also prepared food every day, 120 food packs available at our service centre starting from 4pm and another 300 lunch packs given out at Kampung Jawa in a collaboration with a non-governmental organisation (NGO),” he said.

Balakong state assemblyman Wong Siew Ki also supported the campaign but thinks a long term solution needs to be drafted to help those who are affected.

“Food aid is only a one-time (solution), the most important thing is to assist them in stabilising their incomes after all these restrictions ended,” she said.
