SHAH ALAM, June 17 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari will hold a meeting with the Selangor Speaker today to discuss plans for the State Legislative Assembly to reconvene soon.
Amirudin said this was following the statement made by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah yesterday that Parliament should reopen in the near future.
“The planning based on His Majesty’s view will be done as soon as possible.
“The result of the discussion will be presented to Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj to receive His Royal Highness’ consent to reconvene the state assembly sitting as soon as possible,” he said in a statement today.
Amiruddin said the King’s views calling for parliament to reopen is in line with the people’s aspirations that efforts to overcome Covid-19 could be assessed and debated for improvement as well as to uphold the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.
“I welcome His Majesty’s stand in defending the supremacy of the country’s constitutional democracy system in order for the check and balance process between the legislative, executive and the judiciary can be implemented continuously,” the statement read.
Yesterday, Istana Negara Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said that the King had called for the Parliament to be reconvened as soon as possible to allow the Emergency Ordinance and the National Recovery Plan to be debated by members of the Dewan Rakyat.
The view was expressed after His Majesty chaired a special meeting of Malay Rulers held at Istana Negara yesterday to discuss efforts to combat Covid-19.
This was followed by a joint statement from the Malay Rulers expressing the view that the state of emergency need not be extended beyond August 1.
The Malay Rulers were also of the view that the state legislative assemblies in their respective states should be allowed to reconvene as soon as possible.
