MMA welcomes Selangor’s move to buy vaccines to boost vaccinations

SHAH ALAM, June 11 — The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) welcomes the Selangor government's move to obtain more than 500,000 vaccines for the people of the state through the Selangor Covid-19 Vaccination Programme (SCVP).

MMA president Prof Datuk Dr M Subramaniam said the purchase would speed vaccination in the state, especially for senior citizens, workers in the industrial, manufacturing and services sectors and the youths.

“We look forward to its successful implementation. Also getting more than 1,000 private general practitioners (GPs) onboard the SCVP is indeed the right move as speed, convenience and accessibility are important in increasing vaccination.

"MMA is confident more GPs will participate. We are targeting the participation of around 2,000 GPs in Selangor and in bordering areas in Kuala Lumpur," he said in a statement today.

According to him, efforts to increase vaccination is a much-needed boost to break the chain of infections and speed up economic recovery in the state.

"We also welcome the extension of the state's free Covid-19 screening programme which has had notable success detecting 'silent carrier' of the disease in the state," he said.

Therefore, he hoped that other state governments should also consider similar vaccination and screening programmes.

On Wednesday, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari announced an allocation of RM200 million under the Kita Selangor 2.0 stimulus package to purchase vaccines and achieve herd immunity.

The state government has also allocated RM10.7 million to implement the third phase of its community screening programme.
