STFC: Selangor sees spike in weekly Covid-19 cases

SHAH ALAM, May 9 — Selangor saw an additional 1,000 accumulated number of new Covid-19 cases within one week beginning May 1.

According to the Selangor Task Force for Covid-19 (STFC), the state recorded a cumulative of 7,380 new Covid-19 infections between May 1 and 7 compared to the accumulated figure of 6,398 registered the previous week between April 24 and 30.

“If the recent development is not taken seriously and adherence to the standard operating procedures (SOP) are taken lightly, this could bring harmful impact to the health and economic ecosystems.

“Comply with the SOP and regularly remind our family members, friends and the people around us of the importance of SOP compliance,” said the task force on a Facebook post.

The agency said the increase in infections had led to the enforced movement control order (MCO) in six districts in Selangor in order to contain the spread of the Covid-19.

The STFC said positive cases that were traced to have visited shopping malls and bazaars were among the factors to implement the movement restrictions.

“The number of available hospital beds at the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in the state have also reached a critical level,” it added.

Six districts in Selangor, namely Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang were placed under the MCO beginning May 6 until 17 following the spike in Covid-19 cases.

The remaining three districts — Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor — remain under the conditional MCO.
