Shopee partners with three zakat institutions, collects RM200,000 in zakat fitrah

PUTRAJAYA, May 7 — E-commerce platform Shopee has partnered with three zakat institutions, namely the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP), the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) in conjunction with Ramadan month.

The partnership has managed to attract over 10,000 users from the Muslim community to pay their zakat fitrah (personal tithe) online through the platform.

Shopee regional managing director Ian Ho said the total zakat fitrah collection recorded from April 12 till now was around RM200,000.

“This makes it easy for Muslims to pay their zakat fitrah, as our platform (Shopee) does not impose any service charge to users.

“Users only need to choose zakat payment through ‘Deals, Top-ups & Bills’ on the Shopee app and follow the simple steps provided,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

According to Ian, Shopee was planning to work with all zakat institutions throughout the country in the future.

He said Shopee would also continue to increase its commitment to help Muslims pay their zakat fitrah that could be channelled to the needy, especially when the country is facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Nur Hazwani Ishak, an ardent Shopee user said the facility has enabled her to pay the zakat fitrah anytime and anywhere through the Shopee app.

“Users don’t have to worry, the payment process is the same as a face-to-face transaction. It’s easy, just enter the amount of zakat fitrah you wish to pay and there will be a pop-up of the ‘niat’ (intention to pay zakat) before you proceed with the payment,” she said.

Hazwani said she received her payment receipt from the zakat institution immediately after making the transaction.
