PUCHONG, March 30 — The local authorities in Selangor have been urged to set up recycling centres on a large scale to resolve garbage pile-up problems, said state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han.
Ng said the move is to reduce land use and save the cost of managing waste disposal by local authorities such as what the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) have been doing.
He said he hoped that the collaboration between MBSJ and the KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) to set up recycling centres would be followed by other local authorities.
“If we do not ramp up this activity (recycling), everyday local authorities must deliver 70,000 metric tonnes of solid waste to landfills.
“If the same situation remains the same for the next 30 years, every year, at least 60 acres (24.3 hectares) of land are needed as landfills.
“Therefore, the recycling programmes are very important. I would like to urge all local authorities to add more recycling activities,” Ng said during a press conference after officiating the KDEBWM Recycling Centre at Bandar Bukit Puchong, here yesterday.
Also present at the event were MBSJ mayor Noraini Roslan, Seri Setia state assemblyman Halimey Abu Bakar and KDEBWM Managing Director Ramli Mohd Tahir.
