Bukit Bendera upgrading project adheres to guidelines — Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN, March 20 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who is also chairman of the Penang Hill Corporation (PBBPP), has given his assurance that the Bukit Bendera Upper Station Phase 4 upgrading project will comply with the guidelines set.

He said the large-scale project costing RM9.3 million would be developed in an environmentally friendly manner and comply with the guidelines set out in the Special Area Plan (SAP) 2016 and SAP (Replacement) 2020.

“This initiative is taken to increase the capacity of visitors of up to 700 people waiting their turn to come down from the hill compared to around 200 people at present.

“The main purpose of this project is to improve the comfort of visitors, especially senior citizens and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and make Bukit Bendera a major tourist destination in the future," he said in his speech at the groundbreaking for the project at the top of Bukit Bendera here today.

He said the waiting area at the station atop Bukit Bendera would be enlarged to 1,422 square metres (two storeys) from the original area of 800 square metres.

Chow said the state government through PBBPP intended to maintain the existing green elements such as trees around the area for the aesthetics and natural attractions of the Bukit Bendera peak area.

He added that PBBPP had also implemented a smart queue management system, also known as JustQ 2.0, to help manage the queue of visitors waiting for their turn to board the train.
