HDC partners with DoSM to enable halal industry data analytics

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — Halal Development Corp Bhd (HDC) has partnered with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) on the use of research and data analytics in the halal industry.

HDC chief executive officer Hairol Ariffein Sahari said both parties have agreed to take the necessary steps in empowering halal industry statistical services through knowledge sharing and statistical generated data with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

“This is the first in the world verified big data backed by the government to pave the way for more precise economic indicators in the halal industry,” he said at the virtual launch of the HDC Halal Sectoral Roadmap Implementation 2021, in conjunction with the signing of the MoU, on Wednesday.

HDC, which is a federal government agency, introduced the roadmap to strengthen the halal national blueprint based on the current global economic scenario.

Two sectors have been chosen, namely pharmaceutical and food services.

The objective is to achieve RM40 billion in revenue from halal food services and RM1.6 billion in revenue from the halal pharmaceutical sector by 2025.

Hairol said the initiative was appropriate in view of increasing demand for high-value halal products and services.

It also reaffirmed HDC’s commitment to increase halal industry economic returns focusing on niche areas within the halal promoted sectors, he added.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said more halal industry statistics could be realised through further analysis and research with the cooperation of both parties.

“The DoSM had published extensive information on halal statistics in Malaysia, such as sales, value-added and employment.

“The department also publishes statistics on exports of halal products on a monthly basis,” he said in a statement.
