Thai authorities detain men claiming to be Malaysians in Tak Bai

NARATHIWAT, Feb 18 — Thai authorities have arrested four men claiming to be Malaysian citizens for entering the country illegally.

Tak Bai police chief Col Pol Suthawet Thareethai said the men aged between 16 and 27 who had no valid travel documents were detained at 8am (local time) yesterday together with two locals believed to be smuggling agents, in a vehicle in the Tak Bai district.

“Initial investigations revealed that the four suspects sneaked into the Waeng district, Narathiwat on February 15 and are waiting for the middlemen to take them to an oil palm plantation in Pattani to work,” he said when contacted here yesterday.

He said the suspects would be charged today for sneaking into the country and breaching the quarantine order.

Thailand requires all foreigners entering the country to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine, Covid-19 screening tests, and to purchase health insurance coverage for Covid-19 amounting to not less than US$100,000 (RM403,550) to curb the spread of the disease.
