KAJAN, Feb 3 — Seven river pollution incidents that could suspend the operation of water treatment plant (WTP) in Selangor were successfully averted in January this year.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said three incidents involved Sungai Gong in Rawang, two at Sungai Semenyih in Kajang, and one each at Sungai Chincang in Sepang and Sungai Kabul in Hulu Langat.

He informed that the incidents occurred between January 15 and 23, it was categorised under yellow alert which means the pollution was detected and successfully addressed without suspension of WTP operation.

“So we hope there will be no more water disruption after this. For the past two months, no WTP was suspended, the last suspension was in early December last year,” said Hee to media after visiting the site where 165 litres of abandoned chemicals were discovered here.

According to him, pollution-prone Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Gong are now successfully managed due to fast action by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas), National Water Services Commission (Span), Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE).

Last year, 28 cases of water pollution were recorded with 10 cases categorised as red alert and 18 as a yellow alert.
