Rashid Sidek sees 'Datuk' award as boost to do more for badminton

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 — Former national singles badminton player Abdul Rashid Mohd  Sidek has said that his recent award of Panglima Mahkota Wilayah (PMW), which carries the title of Datuk, in conjunction with Federal Territory Day 2021, has inspired him to continue to contribute to the development of the sport.

"Alhamdulillah, I would like to thank the Federal Territories Ministry for nominating me for the award.

"It might be due to my efforts and contributions to the country in badminton, including winning the Thomas Cup (in 1992) and the Olympic bronze medal (in Atlanta in 1996),” he told Bernama yesterday.

He was among the 355 recipients of awards bestowed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in conjunction with the Federal Territory Day 2021 celebrations yesterday.

Another former national badminton player, Cheah Soon Kit, who won the silver medal in the 1996 Olympic Games, also received his Datukship.

Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, during a special media conference yesterday, said that the date of the investiture was still being finalised.
