Pipe bursts, broken metres cause of non-revenue water

SHAH ALAM, Jan 17 — Pipe bursts, broken water metres and installing illegal pipe connections are some of the main reasons that cause non-revenue water (NRW).

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) said treated water that is lost would cause a huge loss as the water is wasted.

“However, a poll put up on Air Selangor’s social media platforms found that 70 per cent of the users do not know what is NRW.

“Therefore, we urge the public to immediately report to us any incident of a pipe burst, broken metres or illegal pipe connections to enable us to curb the (water loss) incident,” it said.

Last August, Air Selangor had reduced the annual NRW rate to 28.6 per cent compared to the 31.6 per cent recorded in the previous year.

In the past three years since 2017, the NRW rate has been progressively reduced and had shown a consistent decrease year-by-year.

Air Selangor had also spent a total of RM201.9 million in 2019 through the NRW Reduction Programme.
