Flood evacuees who return home could face second wave — Met Dept

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 — Flood evacuees who left relief centres and returned home after the floods subsided are still at risk of facing a second wave of flooding.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Jailan Simon said the chance of floods happening again was there even though the weather has improved since yesterday.

"There is the possibility of heavy rain in Kelantan and Terengganu on January 8 and 9,” he said during a guest segment at Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara episode entitled ‘Monsun Timur Laut 2021: Peka dan Waspada’ (North-East Monsoon: Be Alert and Cautious) that was broadcast live yesterday night.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Civil Defence Force Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Norhafifi Ismail advised the public to limit travelling during the monsoon season.

"During the monsoon season there is the possibility of floods, landslides, and roads being cut off that can cause road users to be stranded. The situation will get worse if road users don’t bring enough food and drink during their journey,” he said.

Norhafifi said limiting travel is in line with the Health Ministry’s advice for the public to leave their homes unnecessarily to curb the spread of Covid-19.

As of tonight, the flood situation in Perak, Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor has improved as the number of victims evacuated to relief centres drop. The number of evacuees in Pahang, however, have risen slightly to 18,217 people tonight compared to 17,747 people this evening.
