GOMBAK, Dec 14 — A RM200 million project to solve the water pollution issues in Selangor will begin January next year, says Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the initiative includes four projects that will complete in 15 months.

“Nanotechnology will be used to clean and clear the water naturally. Also if pollution occurs, we will divert the flow of water to other areas without it entering the (water) treatment plant.

“Then, we pump water reserves from the Hybrid Off-River Augmentation System (Horas) and the Off-River Storage (ORS) to the water treatment plants which is sufficient for five days’ of use,” he said after a visit to the Sungai Tua constituency yesterday.

During the tabling of the 2021 Selangor Budget on October 30, Amirudin had outlined four measures to resolve water supply disruption issues.

They include a pilot project using nanotechnology to treat water at Sungai Gong and increasing the number of water quality telemetry stations for early warning systems at water intake points.

Also implemented is the raw water pumping project from the HORAS and ORS reserve ponds at Bestari Jaya as well as 24-hour monitoring and surveillance at sensitive water sources areas.

On top of that, the Selangor State Legislative Assembly had passed the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) (Amendment) 2020 Bill that imposes heavier punishment for environment polluters.

The amendment raised the fine for the offence from a minimum of RM100,000 to RM200,000, to a maximum of RM1 million while the prison term was made mandatory.
