SHAH ALAM, Dec 8 — A total of 6,300 Universiti Selangor (Unisel) students would benefit from the basic fee exemption under the Basic University Fee Assistance or ‘Bantuan Yuran Asas Universiti ‘ (Bayu) programme.
Unisel Student Affairs dean Amidi Abdul Manan said the programme, which saw an RM4 million allocation in the 2021 Selangor Budget, is targetted for students from low-income families (B40).
The programme is exclusively for students from Unisel and Selangor Islamic University College (Kuis).
"We are very grateful for it and see this as a commitment by the state government to provide quality education without imposing high fees," he said during the Media Selangor’s Bual Bicara talk show titled ‘Covid-19: Strategi Selamatkan Pendidikan, Bela Pelajar’ (Covid-19: Strategy to Save Education, Safeguarding Students) last night.
Meanwhile, Amidi said the fees charged by the state government universities are still relevant and low compared to other higher learning institutions (IPT).
He explained that the cost to do a four-year engineering course in Unisel is RM50,000, while other IPTs charge up to RM70,000 a year for the same course.
“This clearly shows that Unisel fees are still relevant and reflects the state government’s commitment in providing quality education for the children of Selangor," he said.
