Sabah polls runs smoothly, no untoward incidents reported — Acryl Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — The Sabah State Election proceeded smoothly yesterday, with no untoward incidents reported at the 741 voting centres, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

He said the various security agencies had carried out tight controls at the country's borders to ensure there was no large influx of foreigners from neighbouring countries to disrupt yesterday's polls, although there were attempts to enter the country.

"The situation in Sabah, after voting ended at 5pm, is under control, with no problems or issues (reported)," he told Bernama yesterday.

Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang said the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), with the cooperation of other agencies like the police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, guarded the country's borders to prevent any untoward incidents from occurring.

"The MAF and other agencies are always strengthening the country's land and water border controls via Ops Benteng," he said.

Last Sunday (September 20), Bernama quoted Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali as saying they had received information that foreign elements from neighbouring countries might try to disrupt the polls.
