KAJANG, Sept 22 — The recent pollution incident of Sungai Selangor and Sungai Semenyih should be a lesson for the people to not turn a blind eye to illegal activities involving the environment.
Selangor Department of Environment (JAS) director Nor Aziah Jaafar said the public has to be the eyes and ears and help in delivering information to curb such incidents from taking place.
“The rivers are part of the earth and are essential to various living species, therefore we should stop activities that ruin the ecosystem from happening. This also includes open burning activities and pollution by factories that harm the environment,” she said.
Nor Aziah was speaking at the Save the Ozone Awareness programme in conjunction with state-level World Ozone Day 2020 at the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Professional College here today.
On September 3, four water treatment plants in Selangor were forced to shut down due to the contamination of the Sungai Selangor, which resulted in water supply disruption to more than 1.2 million people.
Meanwhile, Nor Aziah said the Sungai Tekala Recreational Forest has been selected for plogging activity (a combination of jogging with picking up litter) in conjunction with the ozone day celebration.
She said students from Mara College and staff of JAS will be participating in the event.
