MPS post demolition notice on river pollution factory

SHAH ALAM, Sept 7 — Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has taken harsh action against the owner of the machinery maintenance factory behind the pollution of Sungai Gong, Rawang, which affected more than a million water users in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

In an operation at 9am today, enforcers posted up the notice at the gate of the premise, under Section 70 (1), Roads, Drains and Buildings Act 1974, which deals with constructing buildings or structures without permission from the MPS.

MPS Corporate Department director Mohamad Zin Masoad said the owners are given three days until Wednesday to produce proof that they have written permission to build the structure at the premises.

“Once the notice period is over, MPS will demolish the buildings if they fail to produce the approval,” he said when contacted today.

The public demanded the factory be demolished following the water supply disruption since Thursday due to the pollution of Sungai Gong, resulting in the closure of Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phases 1, 2, and 3 and the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant.

On Saturday, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari also instructed the owner to vacate the land and restore its condition with immediate effect.

Mohamad Zin said investigations revealed that the premise is operating without a license since 2014 and had been issued two warnings but had not taken heed of it.

“The owner or management of the workshop had never submitted any applications to start a business,” he said.

Earlier today, the Gombak District and Land Office (PDT) had issued a Notice to Remedy a Breach of Condition (7A) to the factory to restore the land, demolish its buildings and cease operations.
