BNM to issue UKM’s 50th anniversary commemorative coins

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will be issuing commemorative coins in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM50).

The commemorative coins were launched by the university's Pro Chancellor, Tunku Laksamana Tunku Datuk Seri Utama Naquiyuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar on August 21 at UKM.

In a statement today, BNM said the coins will come in three specifications - Coloured Silver Commemorative Coin (Proof), Nordic Gold Commemorative Coin (proof), and Nordic Gold Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin, respectively.

The first (mintage quantity: 1,000 pieces) is made of fine silver with 99.9 purity, weighs 31.1 grams with a face value of RM10 and will be sold at RM253 each.

The second (1,000 pieces) is made from copper and several other metals, weighs 8.5 grams with a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM60.50 each.

The third (25,000 pieces) in matte finish is made mainly out of copper, weighs 8.5 grams with a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM13.20 each.

The central bank said 10,000 pieces will be produced in exclusive packaging for UKM to sell to its students and alumni.

"These commemorative coins are also available in a set of two, comprising one coloured silver proof and one Nordic gold proof coins. This set will be sold at RM308 per set with 1,000 sets available," it said.

To provide a fair opportunity for members of the public to buy the limited-edition coins, BNM has set a purchase limit and will initiate balloting in the event of oversubscription.

It will make a further announcement on September 25, 2020, as regards ordering, payment and delivery.
