Bring your own container to markets, says state exco

SHAH ALAM, July 5 — The public is advised to bring their own food containers when buying goods from the morning and night markets.

State executive councillor Hee Loy Sian said this is to reduce single-plastic use that contributes to the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution.

“We will step up on our awareness campaign through posters so that the consumers would reduce the use of plastic at the markets,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hee said that the state government has yet to discuss on extending the 20 sen plastic bag fee programme at open markets, morning and night markets, as well as wet markets as it is difficult to detect the amount of plastic given out to the customer.

“Most of the traders are not using cashier machines or an accounting system that could track the number of plastic bags that are provided for the customers,” he said.

The Selangor government had approved the collection of the plastic bag fee through local authorities beginning January 1, this year. The programme was first introduced in the state since January 2016.

The funds would be channelled to the state Trust Fund and would be used for environmental programmes.
