Limit sales of alcoholic drinks until 9pm only, says Selangor rep

SHAH ALAM, June 3 — Selangor local authorities are urged to formulate a regulation to limit the sales of alcoholic beverages up to 9pm only.

Sentosa assemblyman Gunaraj George said the proposed restriction should be enforced to ensure that those below 21-years-old do not have ease of access in purchasing alcoholic drinks.

“Alcoholic beverages should only be sold at liquor shops that are restricted to visitors, aside from banning those under the age of 21 from entering.

“I have proposed this matter to the government in 2009 when I was a Selayang councillor, but it was turned down due to political differences with the (then) ruling party,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Gunaraj said the Excise Act 1976 should also be reviewed to enable heftier penalty against traders selling alcoholic beverages without licenses.

“Immediate action has to be taken as there are many shops selling cheap liquor and this is harmful to the consumers as it also brings many health complications,” he said.
