KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — The Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim) has spent RM1.85 million on basic necessities to be distributed to over 70,000 recipients under its Covid-19 Musa’adah mission since March.
Its acting director-general Parihah Hasan said the beneficiaries were of those from the low-income group (B40), asnaf (those eligible to receive tithe or zakat), poor families and frontliners including media and security personnel.
"This is a continuation of last year's Yapeim Food Bank programme. Hence, even during the implementation of the movement control order (MCO), we still continue with the programme by donating to the needy community.
"This year, Yapeim allocates RM4 million for the Food Bank 2.0 programme and thus far RM1.85 million has been spent for the purpose," Parihah said when met after presenting the contribution to 30 personnel of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) who are from B40 group at Wisma Bernama today.
Also present was Bernama deputy editor-in-chief (Economic News Service) Khairdzir Md Yunus.
Parihah said, apart from Bernama, Yapeim also distributed contributions to other news agencies including Astro Awani, IKIM FM radio station and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) whose operations remain uninterrupted during MCO.
Meanwhile, Khairdzir said Bernama expressed its gratitude to Yapeim for the contribution, and the news agency, as one of the frontliners, had undertaken the task of providing information and awareness to the public on the dangers of Covid-19.
