SHAH ALAM, April 3 — Close to half of the Covid-19 cases recorded in Selangor has originated from the tabligh gathering at the Jamek Seri Petaling Mosque, says the Health Ministry.
Its director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the disease was transmitted from the people who attended the gathering to those in the tahfiz schools and madrasah institution in the state.
“Selangor has the highest number of cases in the country.
“One of the reasons is that it came from the tahfiz schools and the madrasah where there were those who attended the tabligh gathering in Seri Petaling,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya, today.
The number of cases in the Hulu Langat had increased to over 300 from the 287 recorded cases yesterday.
Seven villages in Sungai Lui, Hulu Langat, was placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from March 30 to April 13, after 71 positive Covid-19 cases were identified among 274 residents of a tahfiz school there.
“In Sungai Lui, there are 90 cases, 25 were from the tabligh assembly and 65 from close contact.
“In other (Hulu Langat) areas, there are 210 cases, with 25 coming from the Seri Petaling gathering and the remaining 185 from close contact and other sources,” he said.
Dr Noor Hisham said the patients from the tahfiz group are aged between 14 to 20 years old.
Today, 863 Covid-19 cases were recorded in Selangor, out of the total 3,333.
The state saw an increase of 63 news cases.
