Keeping a check on local councillors’ performance

SHAH ALAM, Feb 25 — The Selangor government is continuously monitoring the performance of local authorities (PBTs) to ensure the implementation of policies and strategies on state development runs smoothly.

Selangor Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said that the productivity and competency of the PBTs should not be affected due to several underperforming local council members.

"Local councillors have to go through an evaluation process when their two years-and-a-half term ends before they could be re-appointed for the position.

"The evaluation reports would include feedback from state assemblymen on the performance of the local councillors in their respective constituency," he said.

During the Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) public hearing session held on February 20, it was raised that some local council members were not clear of their roles in planning and development.

To this, Ng responded that the state government views the matter seriously and that his committee would take proactive action to address it.
